“Solomon gave orders to build a temple for the Name of the LORD and a royal palace for himself.”
(2 Chronicles 2:1)
That’s pretty much the way it goes, isn’t it, Jesus?
Even while we’re building temples for You
we’re planning palaces for ourselves
coming up with ways to leverage our good behavior
for our own benefit.
How can You bear that?
Here we come in our prayer time with You –
or in our service through some ministry –
feeling all righteous and holy
because we’ve managed to carve out a few minutes for You.
I know You’ve promised to reward me.
But how much of what I do “for You”
is polluted by what I think it will do for me?
“I scratch Your back…
…You scratch mine?”
I don’t even want to know the answer to that question.
But somehow…
O God!
That’s got to change.
